Their impact, however, is larger than just their own companies: As budding developers and event planners, they’re also building work spaces for other local creators and artists. Over the past 15 years, the Voloshins have become major players in building up Philly’s increasingly vibrant creative and maker scene, in part by starting their own successful businesses here, including Printfresh Studio, a flourishing textile design outfit for the fashion and home industries, and Voloshin, their feminine, bohemian clothing line. The wound was two inches from his femoral artery, which was potentially fatal but mostly inconvenient - he and his wife and business partner, Amy Voloshin, had to be in New York that day for the Phoenicia Flea Market, a hip maker emporium at which the couple sells merch from their popular Philly-based clothing and stationery lines. Summary and Suggestions, Progress Towards Tenure: As you see, while the evaluation of your performance includes both accomplishments and areas in need of improvement, overall you have made a good start to your career here at Michigan State University. This is a good level of service for a faculty member in the beginning of her/his probationary appointment. Also, serving as a panel member at this year's major outreach conference was helpful and well received. Service and Outreach: Your active participation in faculty meetings and on the department's admission's committee has been very positive service. I will ask the mentoring committee to help you in this process. We have confidence that you either already have the focus and need only to better articulate it or that you will soon find that focus. Our review of your "work in progress" section leaves us, at least at this point, unable to discern that focus or theme that is likely to lead to the substantial body of work published in our key journals that is necessary to be awarded tenure. In looking ahead, however, the advisory committee and I believe that you need to establish a thematic focus and a research agenda that will be cumulative in building your national reputation. These are key journals in our field and you should continue to publish in them. Your article in print in Journal of MMM and the one accepted in the Journal of RRR, but not yet published are a good start for you. Research: With regards to research, the advisory committee and I agree that you made good progress toward reappointment this year. While it is difficult to use the same teaching strategies that work so well in this graduate seminar, you should consider ways in which you might adapt some of your XXX 888 teaching strategies. With respect to XXX 888, all indications from SIRS forms and student comments suggest that you did an excellent job. I would also encourage you to continue videotaping class sessions in the coming academic year. Members of this committee would individually welcome a dialogue with you about these issues. I suggest that you examine closely the comments made by the peer review teaching committee (see letter of July 4, 1998) in a continuing effort to strive for teaching effectiveness with students at all levels. It was clear that you know the material you are teaching very well and that you are dedicated to the learning that takes place in the classroom. The comments indicated that the introduction of group assignments may have been a useful addition. I did notice an improvement in the SIRS scores in the spring semester. Your willingness to consult with others who have experience teaching large required undergraduate courses was valued, and I hope, helpful. The large class setting posed particular difficulties that you continue to work to overcome. The comments indicate that your lectures seem to lack variety in teaching techniques and could be better organized. We have talked about the SIRS forms in which your overall ratings for these courses is 20% below the department mean. Teaching the first-year theory sequence has been a considerable challenge. Teaching: In the area of teaching, your primary assignment has been to teach the first year theory sequence (XXX 150 and 151), and you also taught a graduate seminar (XXX 888). To some extent, the following assessments follow the expectations identified in that letter. That letter identifies those activities and accomplishments which are expected of you during this first probationary appointment. It will be helpful to you to refer back to the letter of offer you received prior to your tenure system appointment. For complete information on this requirement, please refer to the Faculty Handbook, Section IV and to the attached section of the department bylaws. In compliance with university policy and department bylaws, it is my responsibility to annually evaluate the performance of each tenure-system faculty member, and to prepare a written performance review, taking into consideration input from the department advisory committee. Power and Performance in a Compact Form Factor When you head into the settings area, most of the things you can tweak are pretty simple or have nothing to do with music playback or quality. Spotify’s settings are relatively simple and it’s here that some users do have complaints. By using Search and Browse, you’ll also be able to find podcasts, charts, new releases, and even upcoming concerts in your area, as well as being able to find music by mood or purpose, like studying or exercising. Spotify’s charms don’t end with traditional music and their version of radio, however. Radio is where you’ll want to go if you want music to play without having to make too much of an effort - pick an artist or music type, and it will find music related to it and play until you tell it not to. Browse is a nice feature for the undecided, as it’s a great way to find new music and artists. Your library and playlists live on the left, and to the top on the left, you’ll see the Home, Browse, and Radio buttons. The main interface shows you a selection of things you’ve been listening to recently, or music Spotify has decided you’ll probably enjoy. Premium or not, the app is very easy to use. On the premium tier, the user experience is just a little bit nicer, with the ability to download music (great for planes), skip songs you don’t like and, many people’s favorite plus - you don’t have to listen to the ads. You can also sign up to Spotify Premium by paying a monthly fee. The most basic level of Spotify is free, which is why it really is “music for everyone”. This version for Windows is exactly the type of flagship app you’d expect - it’s crisp-looking, fast, and easy-to-use and, although music quality depends largely on the quality of the device you’re reproducing it on (and not the app you’re using to play it), only the pickiest ears will have anything to say about the quality of the music you can listen to with Spotify. There is a version of Spotify available for almost every platform you could think of using and this is a large part of its likability. Spotify is one of the most popular music apps around, and it’s not at all difficult to see why. The top choice when it comes to streaming musicįor everyone except an unlucky few, Spotify is all the music you’ll need. They’re not perfect, but at least they give us a ballpark for a starting point which we’re able to adjust.īut that’s not the way these formulas are used with online calorie calculators. These estimates are extremely useful for feeding patients requiring tube feeds or IV nutrition, and somewhat useful in providing a starting point for nutrition interventions for malnourished patients and feeding patients with diabetes or other issues with blood glucose, as high or low blood sugars affect the healing and outcomes. We estimate basal metabolic requirements then multiply these basal needs by factors based on our patient assessment. Any dietitians reading this are familiar with these formulas, as they are used by clinical dietitians every day to estimate nutrition needs for hospitalized patients. The MyFitnessPal app and other online calorie calculators use mathematical formulas designed to estimate basal metabolic requirements using height, weight, age, sex and adjustments for physical activity. Not only because it made me feel all crazy around food, but also because it wasn’t even accurate! The Many Problems with Online Calorie Calculators Now that I’ve had a little more space since that time, along with a lot more understanding of weight science, and my own personal weight biases at the time, I can see what a waste of time it was spending those countless hours tracking my food. For a couple years afterward I would sporadically track my intake, in hindsight, always during times I was struggling in other areas of life. I became convinced I was a willpowerless eating machine, when in reality, I was just suffering from the predictable side effects of not eating enough food. I was so embarrassed that I, a dietetics student, could not manage to eat my recommended calorie needs, that I totally lied on the assignment and made up my version of what I thought healthy eating looked like. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this led to hunger-induced binges every single night. I was incredibly distressed by the high number of calories I consumed on my first day tracking (it was college gameday - tailgate beers and pimento cheese add up!), so I tried to restrict the whole next week to get my average intake to the amount MyFitnessPal suggested for me. nutrition professors out there, this assignment is not a smart one to give to a group that’s at risk for eating disorders. My personal experience using an online calorie calculator was in college, when as a dietetics students we were assigned to track our intake for a week. As a dietitian who frequently works with clients struggling with eating disorders that were triggered or worsened by online calorie calculators (and their super disordered message boards), I’ll admit I’m biased. All you have to do is obsessively count every bite of food and you can pick your weight as easily as you pick out your underwear!Īs anyone who has used a calorie counting app like MyFitnessPal knows, it’s not quite that simple. Plug in your age, sex, height and weight, along with how much weight you’d like to lose and how fast, and in less than a second you get a personalized recommendation of exactly how much to eat to achieve your goals. The idea of an online calorie calculator is lovely. Static Application Security Testing tests the code before the application has gone live and allows for remediation of these issues before the vulnerabilities are allowed to be exploited in a live environment. They are tackling this via the below solutions. Veracode are tackling this problem head on with a number of solutions which check these issues in the code so these never materialise, and if they do, alert the coders before these applications go live. This is where process and different technologies come in to make sure that these mistakes do not become holes into the organisation and their applications. But who is checking the checker, humans are not designed to be perfect and will always make mistakes, however good or experienced they maybe. Cypher then suggests he has become an expert in watching this code to the point he can see in real terms what this code really looks like in the Matrix, including anomalies in this code (the agents).Ĭypher, in real life terms of IT security is a developer/coder in most organisations in the 21 st century, amazing at building applications from code and seeing where things should and shouldn’t be. Do you remember the scene in the film where Neo is talking to Cypher about how the Matrix looks from the outside world, lots of the iconic green coded writing. I am sure a lot of you are wondering how this is going to link back to cyber security and the usual trend of our blogs here at Armadillo. The much anticipated Matrix 4 was a hot topic of conversation a few weeks ago in our office and how they were going to bring back one of my favourite films growing up, this is when my colleague said she had never heard of the Matrix and had no clue what I was talking about (she is 21). I find there seems to be a much shorter generational turn around before films become forgotten and lost to DVD shelves or corners of Netflix, with 5 years the usual tipping point. Yes, I am aware I said that word, ‘generation’, and I am only 26. The Matrix: a cult classic film of my generation. When it comes to focus stacking, it might seem natural to ask, ‘Why go to all that trouble when you can just stop the aperture all the way down?’ but it’s not that simple. This is precisely the sort of difficulty the D850’s “focus shift” feature, which automatically varies focus by a set amount over a set number of shots, was designed to solve. It used to be hard to change focus by the same amount with each shot, and unless you finished shooting quickly, there was a chance that the light would change or some other difficulty might arise, resulting in photos that were not suitable for focus stacking. Specifically, what was difficult was taking a series of photos while changing focus a small, fixed amount with each shot. Although dedicated focus-stacking software has been around for a while, the hard part was getting suitable high-quality image files. The technique of focus stacking allows you to enhance the depth of field in an image by taking a series of shots and generating a composite image consisting only of the areas that are in focus. Focus Shift: what it does and how to use it The D850’s handy “focus shift” feature is used chiefly to create the images for focus stacking, which are then combined in optional third-party software to create a final image with extreme depth of field.
The pouring of water from the water bearer’s jar represents the communication of Aquarius’ unique ideas and thoughts. The glyph for Aquarius is meant to be the water from the archetype of Aquarius, the water bearer. Capricorn is asssociated with the sea goat because when the sea goat ventured onto land, it brought with it wisdom to practical tasks just as Capricorn intends to do. The first somewhat v shaped half is the goat’s head, while the curling line attached to it is meant to be the sea goat’s fish tail. The glyph for Capricorn is meant to be of the sea goat. Showing that Sagittarius is the sign that seeks to expand their horizons even if the outcome is unknown. Sagittarius’ glyph is meant to be the shooting arrow of the Centaur, traveling to an unknown destination that is the hopes and dreams of Sagittarius. The glyph for Sagittarius pertains to the Centaur’s (half horse, half human) weapon, the bow and arrow. The second interpretation is that the glyph for Scorpio represents the eagle, emphasizing the “higher” and more transformative side of Scorpio. The M represents the body of the scorpion while the curved arrow is its stinger, which could highlight Scorpio’s intensity and power. The first is the one that directly correlates with the archetype of Scorpio, the scorpion. The glyph for Scorpio has two interpretations. Libra’s glyph is a reflection of the nature of Libra, and the diplomatic and peaceful ways of this sign. Libra’s glyph is of the scales that produce both balance and harmony. The glyph for Libra is the only one that is meant to represent an inanimate object. And the final interpretation is that the glyph represents reproductive organs such as the ovaries, vagina, and uterus again being relevant to the archetype of Virgo. The second interpretation is that the coiled M that is Virgo’s glyph is meant to mimic intensities, the body part that Virgo rules. The first is that Virgo’s glyph is meant to be a simple symbol for the maiden/virgin carrying a bundle of wheat, highlighting both the purity and the willingness to serve of Virgo. The glyph for Virgo has three interpretations all except one pertaining to the concept of “virginity” and purity”. The circle is meant to represent the lion’s head, while the curvy line attached to the circle represents the lion’s mane. The glyph is of the lion the proud and powerful animal that Leo is associated with. The glyph for Leo, like Taurus, directly correlates with the archetype of Leo. The second is that the glyph represents the crab’s claws, an animal that has a hard exterior to protect the vulnerable insides (like Cancer) and is associated with this sign. The first is that Cancer’s glyph represents the breasts, which emphasizes the comforting and “motherly” nature of Cancer. The glyph for Cancer, like Aries and Gemini, also has two interpretations. The second one is that the two columns in the glyph specifically represent Castor and Pollux the two twins in mythology that Gemini is closely associated with. The straightforward one is that the glyph for Gemini simply is the Roman numeral for 2 which directly correlates with dual nature of Gemini. The glyph for Gemini has two interpretations one of which is very straightforward. Taurus is represented by the bull, thus making Taurus’ glyph directly related to its archetype. The glyph for Taurus is of course meant to represent the head and horns of the bull, an animal that is often thought of as stubborn and possessive. The second is that the glyph for Aries is the eyebrows and the nose in respect to the fact that Aries rules the head. The first is that the glyph for Aries represents the head and horns of the ram, the stereotypically aggressive and assertive animal that Aries is associated with. The glyph for Aries can be interpreted in two ways. Each individual glyph is meant to represent either a physical part of a body, a specific association, or both. In astrology, glyphs are simple visual aids used to represent the various signs, luminaries, planets, and asteroids. |
